Platinum vs White Gold

The engagement ring process can often leave you with a million questions running through your mind. But not to worry, we are here to help every step of the way and answer ALL the questions. Many of our customers who are in the process of designing an engagement ring with us have the same questions. One of the main ones being: What is the difference between Platinum and White Gold? There are quite a few differences between the two metals so we’ve put together a chart to help explain.

Platinum

Platinum is a white metal and is the most durable of the precious metals. It is dense and naturally white. Despite it being the stronger of the metals, it is softer than white gold. This means that it scratches easier than a white gold ring would... nothing a little polishing can't fix! The difference in cost between Platinum and White Gold is due to Platinum’s rarity and higher level of purity. While it may be more expensive, Platinum requires little maintenance unlike White Gold. Platinum is a higher investment but makes the best value in the long run.

White Gold

White Gold is a mix of gold and white metals and comes in different varieties. The two most popular forms are 14k and 18k White Gold. 14k White Gold is made by mixing 58.5% gold with 42% other metals while 18k is made by mixing 75% gold with 25% other metals. The ring is then coated with a white metal called Rhodium which gives it its white color. In the short term, with white gold you get more bang for your buck. It looks exactly like Platinum but more affordable. Plus, it's more scratch resistant! However, over time the maintenance required over a lifetime is quite high. You will need to get it rhodium plated every 12-36 months so that the ring stays white, reshanked, and retip the prongs depending on how much wear and tear the ring faces.

If you can't decide between the two just know you can't go wrong either way. If your budget allows, go for Platinum. If not, white gold is still an excellent choice! Both require some maintenance, so be sure to call us to polish, clean, and keep your ring shiny!
